Imagename: Random (possibly pointless) column
Image Description: This column is at the junction of Swann Street (just in case you didn't realise!) and Nunnery Lane. less than 10 years ago the rest of the road had these cast iron columns down the length of Swann Street and had swan neck brackets (swan necks in swann street!) with top entry Beta 5's... but the column spacing was quite far apart and so new columns were put in closer together with WRTL 2600's fitted post top. But for some strange reason this column was left at the end, but the swan neck bracket removed. It may be that the column cannot be removed due to underground services - but why does the column look like it's doing something? the column still has it's door in place (whereas dead columns have the doors removed) and there is a photocell stuck on the top where the bracket used to be - what does the cell switch on and off, because all the lanterns around abaout have their own photocells?

I do think that photocell column is used for the York Wall lanterns and this could have been the only way CoYC could operate them without damaging the historic Wall.

I think the only way to find out is to get a heavy duty 6v torch and test it at dusk to see if the wall lights are affected and if they are then it'll be the wall if not then the question will continue to beg.
