Image Description: Tucked away in a little known corner of Leeds is a small collection of Gas lanterns. The road is Queen Square, and is neatly squeezed in between Claypit Lane, Woodhouse lane and the A58M - all major roads in this busy city. The lanterns are SUGG Windsors, and it is presently unknown how long these have been here - but it is likely that at least two of these lanterns have replaced older gas lanterns that had deteriorated in condition. Each column has an AC Ford control box - this is a newer addition which contains a battery pack, low voltage 2-part electronic photocell (The detector head sticks out of the bottom of the control box - this may be visible in some pictures if you squint a bit or adjust the brightness/contrast levels), low voltage solenoid gas valve and a device to send an electronic pulse to the pilot light so as to ignite the gas. It was just fortunate I happened to be here on a day which was quite dull and rainy, dull enough to fire one or two of these lanterns into life. The columns are marked "Fred Dyson Leeds", and at the foot of each column is an access cover which will hide a gas shutoff valve.
