Internet Explorer Compatiability Mode:
This page is built using universally-recognised HTML and CSS web coding, with is correctly honored and rendered by most popular internet browser programs. However, Internet Explorer is not one of these browsers and therefore requires special treatment to enable pages to be displayed anywhere near the way they are intended to be shown. Unfortunately IE does not support some functions that other better browsers support, and so these functions have had to be disabled for your browser so that you can access this website. Background images for forum pages are scaled up in size due to IE not correctly interpreting a script to size images best for your screen resolution. In order to get the full browsing experience of this website as the site designer intended, please install a proper internet browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
This effectively makes the site behave as though you are viewing it in a proper browser while still using Internet Explorer - and therefore it is recommended to be installed. Hide
Possibly the last photos of these lanterns before they're removed... These lanterns are mounted onto 1940's/50's Revo columns with Stewart And Lloyd brackets added at a later date, possibly when the Turtles were fitted. The lanterns run 250w SON-T lamps, and a few of them are missing their bowls... it should also be noted that some lanterns have grooved type bowls, whilst at least one has an earlier bowl with a white diffuser spot below the lamp. As part of North Yorkshire's recent contract to replace lighting stock that has gone beyond it's service life here in the largest county in the UK, these installations are giving way to modern columns with post-top Philips Iridiums fitted. At present, the replacement is for High Street and Mill Bridge, but it will move on to other areas - there is a back street nearby with an old top entry mercury lantern, and a new column is standing beside that already.
At the time of visiting, only one new column was working, but others have been installed and are awaiting connection. Also shown in this image collection is a photo of a new column replacing an older one with an unknown lantern fitted (possibly WRTL, as it looks like an ugly brother of the Vectra!); there is also a photo of a casual replacement outside the library, where in the recent past an Iridium has replaced a Turtle on the existing column.
