Image Description: The White Cross Of Death (WCOD) is a symbol used in York to mark columns that need to be removed. Columns are tested by MPH Testing for structural integrity above and below ground level, and if any aspect fails testing then the column gets a white cross... this is later followed by Amey popping in a new column alongside, and after quite a lengthy wait the utilities provider eventually gets round to changing over the supply to the new column. In some cases, the column fails its testing in such a major way that the column has to be immediately chopped just above the base section. This is referred to as being Cut-and-Capped, as the top of the remaining base section of the column is covered over to protect the control gear inside which is still live. This series of pictures is an expanding photo album of those columns that are about to meet their demise (and the cut-n-capped ones that already have done so)... most colums are Stewart and Lloyds types, dating from the late 1950's early 60's - with the odd suprise thrown in there too. Oddly, when columns fail, they seem to fail in 'clumps' with normally three in a line failing - sometimes more. Maybe there is something with the water table that affects this.

This section of pictures is from Acomb - my route covered Tudor Road, Cornlands Road, Foxwood Lane, Chaloners Road, Moor Lane / Acomb Park, Askham Lane, York Road B1224, and Beckfield Lane

Images 1-5 are from Moor Lane / Acomb Park. Images 4 and 5 are of cut and capped columns... which is a bit suprising as these are British Steel columns from the late 1980's early 90's.
Image 6-8 are of a grand old Revo columns that has failed.... though not all is as it seems, because the very bottom of the base section  is newer than the rest of the column - this includes the column door which has a tri-head lock rather than the revo standard bi-pin or square head lock. So this may be a cut-and-shut column!
Images 9-11 are some of the failed columns in Beckfield Lane - image 10 showing two failed columns together
