Imagename: | Column replacements on Water End |
Image Description: | In 2008/9 as part of works to create a better environment along clifton bridge over the river ouse, columns were replaced along Water End between Salisbury Terrace (leeman road) and up to Clifton Green (A19) all bar a few columns (the bridge had it's columns removed and Thorn Orus lanterns installed). However the other half of Water End up to the A59 was left with the old columns, which I thought was strange. But now that is changing. New columns have popped up on a 1 for 1 basis alongside the old, and likely life-expired, Stewart and Lloyd columns. The old columns will be to the imperial version of 8m, whilst the new columns appear to be 12m tall and have a very thick shaft (thicker than some previous main road columns installed). There is a gap in the lighting however, and this is on the railway bridge... one column was cut and capped a few years ago and never replaced (the supply to the column is still there as a 1 in 1 out system), but the other one is still there but has no replacement. Instead the replacement columns are at either end of the bridge just as the road itself starts again. The bridge is likely being undisturbed due to it spanning the East Coast Main Line, the primary London-Edinburgh rail route. The new columns are presently lantern-less, but replace a medley of 90w GEC Z9454's and 135w GEC Z9554's. |
