Imagename: The end of a GEC Z8896
Image Description: The mercury replacement crew are taking out a GEC Z8896 remote-geared 80w mercury vapour lantern, and are replacing it with a Thorn Jet 42w Compact Fluorescent lantern. As part of the city of York's Bulk Mercury Replacement programme, this is happening (or has happened) all over the city as a bid to slash the city's energy bills whilst improving lighting levels.
With the remote-geared lanterns, one operative works in the elevated bucket replacing the lantern itself, whilst the other operative isolates the column from the supply and removes all the control gear. In some cases the control gear is just a ballast, in other cases there is also a 2-part photocell controller to remove, or in other less-common cases there is a Venner MSQP timeswitch to be removed. The GEC lantern in these pictures has been retired to a good home and was saved from the costly process of turning it into dog food cans
