Image Description: After a new item shown on BBC, it became known that a street in a council estate somewhere in Rochdale had Uber rare lanterns installed. Later, with the help of google streetview, the road was revealed to be Tintern Avenue - which is a couple of streets off the Rochdale to Burnley road.

The lanterns in question are made by Revo, and have been given the nickname of "seagulls", due to the wing-like shape of the lanterns over-reflector - which is the only form of optical control in these very early low pressure sodium lanterns. At present, Rochdale is the only known location where such lanterns still exist and are still in daily service... I cannot see any form of photocell on these lanterns, and so I believe these are also still timeswitched.

These 15 images are the best of about 25-30 images I took. My Sony Ericson K770i mobile phone camera only has a limited zoon capability, and so I brought along some binoculars to try and old trick of mine to get a much better zoom. Sadly, using binoculars adds issues such as camera shake and that the binoculars have to be focused correctly and the camera lens located exactly dead centre - as a millimeter either way will black out all or part of the picture.

Enjoy these images of these spectacular survivors.
