Image Description: The Strand is the epicentre of quite a large council estate in Rochdale called Kirkholt. I was here exactly 11 months ago to obtain what would become my new bike (and other parts that went into my other bike, that could then rise from the ashes), and I took a picture looking across The Strand - shown here. The first column has a Phillips MA lantern fitted, but the column in the background is of more interest because it relates to the images you're looking at now.

The column stands beside the bus stop, which is used by the number 6/7 Kirkholt Circular bus routes as a terminus point for the 'part route' and evening services - and the bus stop is outside the collection of shops typical to those normally found in council estates.... but what other council estate can boast having an Open Sodium lantern running a 90w SOX lamp?
These two pictures show the lantern from the side and from the front - and the arc tube of the SOX lamp can clearly be seen. the enamel over-reflector of the lantern has some pock marks where corrosion has set in, but that is to be expected of such an ancient lantern.
