nice sli lanterns would love one of those. Have a good alpha 6 but no alpha 5

Re: the Alpha 5s. I know these two survivors very well, although a recent visit (Aug 2014) indicates both are now in a very poor condition. You are correct in that these lanterns were indeed used on the majority of the A556 / Chester Rd, certainly as far as Lostock Gralam, before being replaced wholesale by Philips Ma50s. Cheshire CC was a major user of the Alpha 5 lanterns, but it also used GEC Clearmain 9517s, especially around Wilmslow and Handforth on the same sleeved CU columns. As a contrast, new schemes from the 70s, especially on the rural A5102 as far as Woodford, used Thorn Alpha 6 lanterns on Petijean columns.
