Gants Hill has been receiving a complete facelift since December 2009, which has involved some of the streetlighting being replaced. The most unusual lighting installed as part of the regeneration scheme are these high-mast installations which have been installed at each exit of the roundabout, replacing WRTL SR200s which were installed around the edge of the roundabout and which were only installed around 1997 (one can be seen at the extreme left of the image). There are only three lanterns per column (most high-mast installations I've seen have 5 or more lanterns per column) and the lanterns are not specialist high-mast lanterns but look to be Woodhouse Discs. Unfortunately, they run SON (I was rather hoping they would run metal halide in order to be more eco-friendly), but I suppose TfL have already made a bit of an effort to save energy by only installing three lanterns per column. In the background on the Woodford Avenue, post-top iridiums were installed in March when the road's central reservation was reconstructed. These replaced ZX2s on 1970s Fabrikat columns, which held GEC Z9564s until the late 90s. On the A12 Eastern Avenue coming from Newbury Park (out of shot to the left), the final 5 double-bracket SR200 installations before the roundabout were replaced with Iridiums on double-bracket Stainton columns. The same has also happened on the A12 coming from Redbridge, only the Iridiums replaced ZX3s instead of SR200s. What amazes me is that all the outgoing lighting was only around 10 years old, so it still had lots of life left in it, and yet it has already been replaced with more SON lanterns. But I guess that while Gants Hill is being regenerated, TfL may as well kill two birds with one stone and replace the lighting as well!
