Image Description: Likely to be taken roughly in the late 1940's early 1950's, these pictures are from one photo which shows one of York's major streets under construction.
Today's scene is very different... The car garage became a Talbot car dealership in the 1990's, then it lay desolate for about 5-6 years before becoming a small office block next door to the behemoth that is Stonebow House. The old looking house is long gone and a carpet warehouse resides on the plot - the plot on the right of it is now occupied by half-built dwellings that were supposed to attract high flyers who'd like its wood cladded exterior and odd shaped windows (but instead the Recession came and the building now looks messy); the buildings on the corner plots are still there. The work to the right of the picture is likely when the Hungate area was last redeveloped... formerly an area of poverty, all the very small and tightly packed terraced dwellings were flattened and made way for buisness / light industrial developments... now the sands of time has turned and the light industry has gone, and this photo is actually displayed as public art on a hoarding which hides the building work to build new modern apartments (which ironically are probably as tightly packed as the terraces that were originally on the site - only now people who want to live there have to pay a premium!)

The photo is ideal as it shows the original lanterns to the Revo Monarch street lighting columns that were installed in the late  1940's. The ID of these lanterns is unknown, and thusly so is the lamp type used - but they may have been early Sodium lanterns.
