Image Description: Another photo of a photo that is a piece of public art... this shows the poverty-stricken hungate (likely Dundas Street) during the prewar years. The streets were lit by 'windsor' type gas lanterns, lanterns on corners were wall mounted. The most notable part of this photo, however, is the mighty imposing Leethams flower mill. Standing on the banks of the River Foss in the Hungate area of York city centre until the 1930s, Leetham’s Flour Mill may have been one of Europe’s largest flour mills.
Between 1888 and 1889 Messrs. Leetham & Sons, millers, came to an agreement with the corporation whereby they were to erect a large mill and silo, and to pay £200 a year in lieu of dues on the Foss and £600 in lieu of those on the Ouse. By the end of the century traffic on the Ouse was rising rapidly. This was mainly due to the tonnage carried by Leetham's, but other traffic was also increasing until 1902–3 when it began to fall again.

The main 19th century mill building was designed by Walter Penty. Rowntree and Co took over the building in 1937. Mark W Jones, in The Snickelways of York, writes of Navigation Warehouse (as it was apparently known at one stage): "until 1967 thousands of tons of ingredients, including cocoa beans and Gum Arabic, were shipped from Hull docks right up to the landing stage."

More recently, this much-admired industrial building has been converted into offices and flats, and is now known as Rowntree Wharf.... but it is nowhere near as large as the silos! To think this used to stand right in the heart of york city, and now residents rattle their cages every time there are plans to build a sightseeing wheel (like the london eye) that is, at best, only half the height of that silo in the photo!
