Image Description: Taken from a public exhibition, this shows what the centre of York used to look like. Until until the very early 1990's, this street retained it's 2-way street status, after which it was pedestrianised and only a very narrow sliver of a vehicle route on the left hand side now exists for 1-way traffic. The parking area and roadway on the centre and right of this image are now a public area for various performers and continental markets and all the other stuff that tourists seem to like. The area nowadays is lit by floodlights mounted to the walls of the surrounding buildings (of which are exactly the same as in this picture - even the Browns shop at the end is still Browns department store). the underground Gents toilets were still used until late summer 2010, although they were part of a larger toilet block by that point - the original ladies underground toilets were at the other end of the street (near Browns), and I believe they are still under ground even though the area has been paved over.
Points of note are the Trolleypole with a fancy bracket and what is either an early sodium lantern or a MB mercury lantern (the design of the bracket can still be seen at the very start of the A59 at Holgate Road - which may be an original or maybe even this very bracket that was welded to a wall plate), the columns along the centre of the road with fancy brackets and Open type lanterns (now long gone), and what I believe is a GEC Wembley illuminating the Gents toilets
