Image Description: These pictures are from a Public Exibition. This one is of York's famous shopping streets at a time before the area was pedestrianised. In terms of the buildings, not much has changed. The buildings behind the clock on the left hand side have gone and been replaced with modern buildings - but otherwise it is the same. The clock haning from the wall is for Boots The Chemist, and still stands to this day despite Boots having recently moved out and now occupying the former Woolworths store (which is the last building on the right hand side of the road before it goes round the corner). The Willow cafe is still there and still called the Willow, but is now a chinese buffet. Stead and Simpson shoes have moved up and round the corner a bit, into a larger unit.
The main point of note is the lighting. All the lanterns are wall-mounted glass-bowled GEC Z8430's fitted onto custom-built wall brackets. Pretty much the same as what this image shows. The lanterns and brackets would have been installed in the late 1950's/ early 60's and would be running 250w-400w MBU lamps, controlled by Venner time switches. At some point, these lanterns were replaced by GEC Z8600's on the same brackets running 250w-400w MBFU mercury vapour lamps, controleld by photocells; and in 2009/2010 these were again replaced by Holophane QSS's on the same brackets running150w CDM metal halide lamps and controlled by radio frequency switching. The original control gear boxes still exist on the walls. But I am glad I found this image, as it proves to me that York was once lit by Z8430's on the main streets.
