That looks like an old Metrovik leak transformer... I've got one that looks very similar, somewhere...

The large AC Ford Control Box houses the fuse for the street lighting switch wire. However it is rarely used these days as all lanterns have there own control boxes with cut-outs in. That is the small white box just above the large green one. The taped up cell can also be seen - this dates from when group switched SOX dominated.

Now most of the overhead network is wired with insulated cables and no street lighting line so each lantern is individually switched.

London Road is seeing its Fabrikat columns lit with ZXs, Iridiums and SGS203s replaced with these seriously curvy installations with what look like Philips Citysoul lanterns installed on them. These have been here since about March and the old columns still haven't been removed. The column to the right fitted with an Iridium looks to have been missed too!

yes the lamp life is very short. The street was equipped with these lanterns and biiger ones which was been used maybe for days when the prime minister came to there I think.

At the moment I don't know the power wattage of the Iridium replacement... but I think they're 150w.

how much power?! 2000w HQL AND 10,000w XBO - If we had those things on our motorways nowadays we'd have aliens thinking they'd found a landing strip!
The lantern looks like a retro 1980's cassette recorder 'boombox' turned over on its side!

we did the next best thing... got the concrete swan-neck with fixture! That particular one now lives in either Brighouse or North Wales

I've done a bit of searching and I think they might be Philips Speedstar lanterns. See the link below:

well I don't know if anybody else here has, but I certainly haven't seen anything quite as strange as this - or that burns 8 lamps!!

LOL  sadly I have never seen it lit. You can imagine how  rare these lanterns are now.
Its new version which is still today available (Siteco Sistellar Maxi) has still 6 lamps ! ;-)
In the sixtys in Germany was been many very big post tops to see. ( From HQL, SOX, Xenon and FT ). I will show some more rarities here. Maybe in the UK was been similar ones (?)

What a strang looking lantern!! When I look at this, I feel that it should actually be a Seattle-style radio tower - and there should be little people inside it walking around!

I take it this is Germany's version of the Giant Post Top.... especially with EIGHT lamps inside!

Some weird new lanterns were installed over the subways leading to and from the A12 Eastern Avenue at Newbury Park about a month ago, replacing some rather weathered Phosco P567s and a few casual replacement SGS203s. One can be seen in this very crisp, springy shot basking in the sunlight. I've no idea what make they could be as I haven't seen anything like them before - they're certainly not the prettiest of things either! Anyone have any ideas what make and model they could be?

Not all of them - some are still bearing their original MRL6s, strangely enough! Most of the slip road columns still have their original lanterns too! I can't help but think that this scheme has been somewhat piecemeal...

Yup the Alpha 8 isn't the original lantern. Knowing Enfield, I reckon the original lantern was a GEC Z9554M

This particular part of the Green Lanes scheme is in the London Borough of Enfield as the lantern choice is the Arc.

I've seen these working at night - definitely Cosmopolis (or MH) lamps. The Evolo is Harringey's new staple lantern.
