This lantern has been identified as a Phosco P75. Thanks to Glen Adair for the identification.

No doubt these have been replaced with the ubiquitous hockey stick or Iridium

Oh what a lovely old column and bracket, I haven't seen any of these for years and now they are being replaced by these ugly steel efforts.  :(

Yes, this sphere looks completely out of sorts with the rest of the column, this is the first time I have seen such a lamp given this kind of treatment, certainly not pretty at best.

And a huge loss in my opinion, hockey sticks are commonplace now sadly and they don't have the grace that these lovely old swan necks have, such a shame because I'm sure if maintained properly they could still give years of useful service.

Oh, and they're not technically dayburning. Most lanterns in this area are (group) timeswitched and often come on rather prematurely.

Re: Phosco lantern on Vaughan Street opp Llandudno station. I can confirm that this and two other columns (one is an Eleco with original curved bracket arm) were still in situ in Aug 2014, however all three were in the process of being replaced. New columns had yet to be put in service, but it may not be too long before these veterans are removed.

Re: GEC 75580s. During a visit to the town in Aug 2013, I noticed that the 2 columns at the Mostyn Street end of Llewelyn Avenue were in the process of being replaced. By Aug 2014, these had long gone, however there are a few still more dotted around.

Re: GEC Boats. Although these lanterns are still fairly numerous in Deganwy and Conwy, with many still retaining their original bowls, a recent visit (Aug 2014) indicates that a few are now being replaced by LEDs. I suspect all minor road lighting in the area will be heading this way in due course.

Regarding the Alpha 3s. These were still in situ in 2012, however whilst visiting Llandudno in Aug 2013, I noticed that this installation had since been replaced. Steel columns with post top SON lanterns and those "fascinators" seem to be the standard fayre in the area these days.

Re: Abandoned Alpha 5s on the A556. I have been aware of these for many years now. From a recent visit (Aug 2014) I can confirm they are still in situ, however both lanterns are now in a very poor condition. Sadly, it looks like they have been targeted by vandals, as both have now lost their lamps. Although it has been lit by SON for several years, you are correct that the whole A556 / Chester Road in this area was once lit by SLi, at least certainly as far as Lostock Gralam, where GEC Z9564s on twin arm steel columns took over. With the ending of SLi lamp production, all the Alpha 5s were then replaced en mass by Philips MA50s many years ago but the concrete columns were retained. As well as these two, two more CU columns which have retained their MA50s are still to be found in the VOSA checkpoint area, long after the rest had gone. As a sidepoint, Cheshire CC had plenty of SLi schemes into the mid 80s, especially in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge, where GEC Clearmain Z9517s  on CU columns where to be found in quantity. On the rural A5102 from Woodford to Wilmslow, a scheme from the 70s utilised gearless Alpha 6s on Petijean columns. Later on, an installation on the nearby B5358, used Alpha 5s on Thorn QC10 columns. As this was probably one of the first installations of group A aluminium columns, I recall it was heavily featured in Thorn Lighting publicity material at the time. I don't think these brand new Alpha 5s had a very long life, as they were soon replaced with GEC Z9554Ms. All interesting stuff though, nevertheless.

Re: the Alpha 5s. I know these two survivors very well, although a recent visit (Aug 2014) indicates both are now in a very poor condition. You are correct in that these lanterns were indeed used on the majority of the A556 / Chester Rd, certainly as far as Lostock Gralam, before being replaced wholesale by Philips Ma50s. Cheshire CC was a major user of the Alpha 5 lanterns, but it also used GEC Clearmain 9517s, especially around Wilmslow and Handforth on the same sleeved CU columns. As a contrast, new schemes from the 70s, especially on the rural A5102 as far as Woodford, used Thorn Alpha 6 lanterns on Petijean columns.

In the background of this image you can see an Eleco Way post-top surviving in the car park of Newbury Park Health Centre.  These lanterns were commonplace on Redbridge's side streets before they were mass replaced with installations like that seen in the foreground in the mid-1990s. I don't think the lantern works though as you can just about see that there's a floodlight installed a little way down the column.

A previously unlit car park near me in the London Borough of Redbridge is now illuminated with what look like TRT Aspect LED lanterns.

Just below and to the left of the Eleco GR550 in the previous photo is this Philips MI55 whose bowl has gone rather musky. Connaught Lane, as you can see, is lit with flat-glass ZX1s installed on post-top adapters.

Lighting the entrance to the car park of the Fort Access gym and Fairbairn Boxing Club on Connaught Lane (an alleyway which runs down the back of the buildings on Ilford High Road) is this Eleco GR550. It looks as if it may still work as the bulb is intact and there are no floodlights in its vicinity!

At the rear of the Topps Tiles on Ilford High Road is what looks to me suspiciously like a bowl-less Thorn Beta 3, although I stand to be corrected on that!

Came across this today in Ilford. I've identified it as a new Urbis product, the Pilzeo LED post-top lantern. It's a casual replacement for a Sapphire, which would have casually replaced a 1980s sphere like this. Note the two Philips MA30s still kicking in 2014 on the Griggs Approach bridge behind - I'm very surprised that they haven't been Furyoed by now, like many much younger lanterns in the borough!

These installations replaced post-top Iridiums, which look to have been temporarily installed during road widening/improvement works in August 2012, which in turn replaced SGS203s. The new lanterns look like either Urbis Miuras or Cabrios.
