Hello I'm new here.
I'm from Germany and I found this very interesting forum today because I'm also a street light collector.
However I'm in moment fascinated about these English Siemens luminaires. I have never seen them here even though my collection is dominated by Siemens street lights.
There must be a big difference, but what? Even the Siemens sign is different.
I hope I can learn thanks to this forum a little bit about the English outdoor lightning. Things like why was the SO / SOX lamp so popular in the UK?
It's a little bit embarrassing for me to write such a lot and miss the point so I write here also something theme related:
If you have pictures of german lanterns (which are for sure in the UK like the Siteco /Siemens lanterns) I can help by specifying them
Greetings
magslight

Hello everyone.

I am Wayne, I'm 34 and I live near Preston, Lancashire.  I have had an interest in street lights most of my life since I was very young.  I have just recently started taking even more of an interest in them, hence I found this site and a few more besides.  So yes, living in Lancs, I am surrounded by WRTL's finest Vectras and MRL 6s and if you live on my road, 2600s which recently replaced Urbis ZX1/Prism Bowl lanterns.  My favourites are Thorn Gamma 6 and the Phosco P178, mainly because I was surrounded by the things as a child when I lived in Bucks and there was a Gamma 6 outside my bedroom window!

Keep up the good work!

Regards,
Wayne

Hello and Welcome. I suspect you and one of our other members may get chatting quite soon, as he's just down t'road in Blackpool.
I myself have often visited that side of the hills either just on random journeys or to see mates.

In fact, for a while I had one of Preston's biggest lanterns in my collection (featured in my avatar), but had to sell it on due to space constraints. Shame really.

The Thorn Gamma 6 is one of those lanterns that is common and yet a design classic at the same time. I have two myself (narrow canopy and china hat canopy) in addition to the newer Gamma Basique design. In fact, it would seem that these lanterns were registering in my mind a lot sooner than I'd realised, as I was looking at a picture I made up in a graphics program, an image of a night city scene, and there in the foreground is a modified gamma 6.... and I made the image long before streetlighting became a proper interest.
