Hi everyone, I have just registered here, and to be honest I have only just started collecting street-lighting lamps. My main interest is vintage electrical switchgear and wiring accessories, but I have an interest in electric lighting, especially the older stuff. I managed to obtain a couple of Phillips SOX lamps, a 90 watt gear-in-head lamp (MA90, I think) which works, and a 135 watt with remote gear (but I don't have the gear), from a lighting contractor. The old lamps were lying in the corner of the yard and I asked in the offices if I could have a couple of them, the boss of the company let me take a couple so I picked the least damaged ones I could find. There was only the one with the control gear in it though. And so a new branch to my collecting has been formed........... I was introduced to this forum and recommended to register by someone who has been here for some time. |

Welcome of the forum, If you like old switch gear you would have a field day is some of the old water pumping stations. The one I was in the other day up on the north Pennines has an intact 1940s possibly earlier switch panel. I believe it has been disconnected since around 1960 and the station now only houses valves and some of NEDLs transformer gear for a nearby overhead system. If I manage to get back up again at some time I will get some photos. |

Hi there all, Just saying hello and that I'm rather pleased that I have stumbled across this website/forum (after searching 'street light enthusiast')!!! I didn't think I would be alone, but I never thought that there would be this much activity in York! It's great. Looking forward to hopefully becoming integrated and learning and contributing. Thank you for the warm welcome mazeteam. I'am based in York, near the Dormouse Vintage Inns pub off Shipton Road (A19). I remember briefly when that area used to be the Clifton Mental Hospital, and there being many old SOX bulkheads on swan-neck columns that were painted green, and is it Thorn Gamma lanterns? Please pardon my use or probable incorrect terminology - I was young then - and only just learning now! |

Yes I think there were Gamma 6s up there. A member of my family works up near the dormouse, in one of those offices stuck right down at the far end of the road. I'm based over the other side of the city, near ASDA. For quite a while I have been wondering whether a city the size of York would probably have another lighting enthusiast around. |
