The moderators and I have been cracking down on the following recently:

1) Posts and sentences which don't start with a capital letter.
2) Unnecessary apostrophes e.g. "I have seen many Alpha 7's in collection..."
3) Irrelevant posts that contribute nothing of value to a given discussion

Please proof-read your posts before submitting. Some browsers (such as Google Chrome) automatically highlight spelling errors, so this should help you out. The site team have the right to edit any post to meet these standards.

I'd also like to recommend that when you're writing out wattages, do so with a capital 'W'. The correct way is '50 W' not '50 w'. Bear in mind that it is good practice to have a space between the number and symbol but this isn't fully essential. I'll let you into a little anecdote, Mike Barford used to use the lower-case symbol and when he realised his mistake he went through EVERY page on his extensive website and made corrections!! Note that the moderators won't necessarily correct lower case watts symbol, it is just we recommend that you use the upper case for consistency.

I would just like to echo all of the above...

Some posts have been deleted today where the content would have been best sent as a PM between the Ukastle members concerned, rather than being as a post. This applies even if the content is a "members only" section.

I am in charge of more technical aspects and support, and so most of the above will be undertakn by Alex, Phosco152 and Sotonsteve.

The irony of this typo...

Errors such as confusing 'your' and 'you're' are the ones that annoy me the most... Often I see these on Facebook!

And 'its' & 'it's! Generally we will correct these errors as soon as we read them. If you feel your post has been unfairly edited, you can always PM me to sort things out. Overall though, the editing shouldn't be seen as a negative thing - it keeps the forums tidy.

 I actually thought somebody would pick this up in a couple of days after me posting. Just a case of my wireless keyboard dropping out a letter - I saw it and couldn't be bothered to go back and edit it, and wondered how long it'd be before it was spotted!

I've often noticed that with some people, as some bird who I fancy on there (I know her through a mates mate) often puts gd for good, ur for your / you're and this took me a while to work it out. I use (the now half knackered) MS Works Word to type up my posts as it has spell check.

Microsoft Office products also offer a grammar check whilst you type too (although it uses the American dictionary and so it thinks the lazy spelling for words like 'colour', 'honour', and 'sulphur' (color, honor, sulfur, respectively) are correct, and it does throw up odd things on the grammar side of things too.... but a normal spell check wouldn't find that. Also putting in 'you're' when you mean 'your' isn't always picked up. Likewise there can be confusion as to where the apostrophe goes as regards its, its', it's (as the latter means 'it is' but can sometimes be used as a possesive for an item)...

Further to the Watt symbol, I've discovered that there should be a space between the number and the ''W''. I spotted this on some instructions which came with my just acquired new old stock SL*9 Lamps.

Photos will be uploaded in due course.

I'd already mentioned above about the space, however, it's good that you've reminded those who didn't see it.

To be honest, the space rule applies to all units except for inches ( " ) and angle degrees ( ° ).

Examples:

38  °C is the temperature
40° angle
12" diameter
12 m column
30 km in distance
40 mph wind speeds
