Sometimes a 1000w ballast turns up on ebay now and then... they're pretty big.

I think this seller must have a job lot of these, but is selling them one at a time.

Seeing that someone had bid on the one Claire had highlighted, I thought it had been an opportunity missed, as they are certainly rare, not on sale any more (as far as I searched), and I wasn't born early enough to see these in action (they are effectively the MBF/U lamp before they started adding the phosphor coating to improve the colour rendering).

Having said that, I still thought it would be nice to own one - and fire it up in the GEC Z8430CM once in a while - but I still didn't fancy an expensive bidding war with the other bidder. But as soon as the one Claire spotted had disappeared, another one came on sale from the same seller at the same price, so I bidded on it, was thankfully the only bidder, and won it for £5 plus £4 postage. And as soon as bidding ended on my one, another one appeared! The auction for this one ends on Thursday night.

My GEC Z8430CM from Harrison Lighting now has three bulbs - a 250w MBF/U, a 250w MB/U and a 210w internally ignited SON retrofit, but it still has no bowl. Thank you to Claire for finding these rare bulbs for sale!

Some of these lamps came up a while ago but I'm not sure if it was the same seller. I got a couple. Mine are in Atlas wrappers. Sotonsteve and I did compare 250W MBU and 250W MBF in my '8430CM. The tubular lamp had a much colder colour with harsh shadows than the MBF lamp.

Aren't the MBU lamps ideal for use in old mercury lanterns like GEC Dioptrion's, Metrovik Trafford 2's, and stuff like that with arc deflectors?

MBU lamps are high pressure lamps but without the fluorescent outer bulb of the MBF lamp we are more famaliar with. They can be used either horizontal or vertical. The wrapper on mine states this.

You are thinking of the low pressure MA lamps which must be operated cap up or if horizontal, with an arc deflector.

As MBU don't have the fluorescent bulb they produce a more green/blue light. MBF uses a phosphor to convert some of the UV component to the red part of the spectrum offsetting the blue/green components of MBU.

I've never seen an MBU lamp operating in real life. I guess they are a very cool white temperature?
