I've been driving past this wood pole mounted Philips MA60 on the A5 at Brownhills for many years, but recently stopped to get a picture of this unusual installation. This is a remote-geared 180 Watt lantern perched high up on a wood pole mounted steel bracket with its 180 Watt transformer, capacitor and cut-out cramped into a small AC Ford control box. I've never seen another one like it, and it must rate as the biggest sodium lantern mounted onto a wooden pole!

Is that AC Ford box a Tardis or something??
There is no way that MA60 would still be there if the gear was in the lantern shoe.

There's quite a few similar pole mounted MA60s in the Holme Valley. The installations are on the A616 between Brockholes and New Mill but they have now been replaced by SRL8s, however the lanterns on some of the pole mounts are still there, but are no longer wired to the juice.
