This super picture (from Rail magazine)  is of Sheffield Victoria in the 1960s. The buildings were demolished during the 1970s when the station closed. A freight line is all that remains and runs through the site and past part of a platform.

The columns are the 25ft version of the "Broadcrete" column made by Tarslag Ltd of Wolverhampton. Never that popular, a smaller group B example survived in Crawley until the south coast PFI replaced it. I have never seen a picture of the Group A version. The lanterns appear to be Eleco HW720s.

Not much remains now... and the line itself only has a one-a-day freight service up to the steel works. Stations further up the line are in an abandoned state and some still have Abacus dropdown columns with Philips SGS203's fitted.

53 years to the day that the Queen opened the original Forth road bridge, she opened the its replacement - the Queensferry Crossing.

News buletins today showed vintage coverage from 1964, however if the full British Pathé film is viewed on YouTube there are some brillant lighting images.

This still taken from the south side of the bridge shows low pressure sodium, probably SLI on steel columns.

Image

Closer to the toll booths, mercury lighting seems to be used, possibly GEC "turtles" with polished aluminium canopies - seen end on.

Image

The approach on the southern side also utilises floodlights, with possibly Alpha 1s (or more turtles) on the slip road.

Image

200W SLI lighting seems to have been used on the bridge itself.

Image

Image

On the north side, at the original Queensferry car ferry berth, a super shot of twin bracket Stanton 7 columns with probably Phosco P120/122 lanterns.

The SLI lanterns were original style Atlas Alpha 5s. Bob C has one in his collection.

Whilst having a sort through some old magazines recently, I came across this edition of "Historic Commercial News" from 1988.

The front cover shows this great example of streetlighting maintenance. Notice also the contemporary ATE traffic signal and the cast aluminium sign pointing the direction of the car park. Whilst this type of traffic signal has long gone from UK roads, a few of these car park signs can still be found.

Enclosed is a scan of the picture and some details on the vehicle depicted.

From Rail magazine, this vintage shot with unidentified lanterns - probably fluorescent - to the right of the train.

From RAIL magazine, a picture of Huddersfield station, with CU concrete columns and unusual brackets.

Image

Cleethorpes with fluorescent platform lighting, and GEC Z8480 vertical fluorescent lantern, extreme far left.

From RAIL magazine and clearly a press run of the APT, the caption reads “An Advanced Passenger Train, as seen on 7/2/81 in London. ALAMY" but of real note are the lanterns on the right platform.

Image

Could these by the modified Phosco P141 lantern?
