From Andrew Marr's " A History of Modern Britain" part 2, which covered the 1950s to 1963 and the Profumo affair.

Image

Alpha 1 and what looks like an open sodium lantern on concrete column.

Image

Massive concrete arched bracket with what was then 140W SOH or possibly a mercury lantern. From the early 60s and the CND march to Aldermaston in Berkshire to protest about American Polaris SSBNs being berthed in Holy Loch to the south west of Glasgow.

Image

Twin fluorescents (left) and single one (right). July 1963 and John Profumo admits all, leading to a media frenzy.

Looks more like a Z9480 missing its bowl, lamp and gear.

Was possibly being replaced by the Alpha 1 installation. That shot shows how ahead of it's time the Alpha 1 really was, at a quick glance I thought it was a modern Urbis installation! Might be just my eyes though...

That installation looks very much like this one. Eleco Lancaster MA lantern on a CU Avenue column with Arc 2D bracket.

The Alpha 1 is actually on a completely different level (roadway higher up) and further away than the concrete column, it is the camera angle that makes them look next to each other, so one isn't replacing the other.

Yes, when I saw the Aldermaston column it did remind me of that picture from Claire.

The bracket and lantern from that Eleco Lancaster installation Claire pictured have gone now but the column is still there. I don't know if a collector got hold of them or what happened to them, they just disappeared virtually overnight  :?

I wonder if the council will retrofit a Vectra for a replacement?!

  If it was under Lancashire County Council then that would be a definite yes! As it's in Blackpool though it could be literally anything!  ;)

I'm just amazed it lasted so long! The thing it used to light (the Coliseum Bus Station) closed down in about 1987 and the area has been a car park ever since.

If my memory serves me correctly, collector John Thompson has got the lantern.

I miss seeing it as it was right next to where I work although I'm pleased it's gone to a good home  :)

Yes, a lot of the "notably rare" lanterns often have more than one pair of eyes watching for changes. It was John who was able to aquire the Preston Flying Saucers.

for all I know, the Fancy Flying Saucer in Southport is probably being watched.
