What I notice with new towns is the single bracket columns on main roads have sharp corners whereas the type commonly used elsewhere has the rounded version like the one nearest the camera.

I've always thought of Preston as a city... sort of a west-coast version of York. But if the whole area was designated a new town, that would explain why the postcodes in Chorley start off with PR

Then again so does Southport which is surprising as you would think it would have a Liverpool postcode. In fact the PR postcode boundary covers a wide area including most of the rural parts of the Fylde Coast and the western Ribble Valley area.

Very well observed! Well strangely enough I noticed a long time back that the older metal columns around Preston, Chorley and South Ribble have the angle-edged brackets. I always wondered why this was. They're particularly used in the suburban areas of Preston and the main roads that connect Preston with Chorley including the A6 and all around the 70s/80s Walton Summit and Clayton Brook areas. At one time these were the most commonly-found main road columns in Chorley borough (possibly still are) and have a slightly different design to the Preston and South Ribble versions as the bracket looks a bit thinner compared to the column on the Chorley versions.

How about this (scroll down) from Stevenage courtesy of Simon Cornwell?

That's really nice.

I can't help but think that this is essentially a giant P106/107 that runs fluorescent

Indeed, many of Phosco's post top lanterns were very similar and it does seem "odd" to have so many similar designs. Another case of British industry not being "clever". The picture from Simon's site obviously was taken when the housing estate was new in the late 1960s/early 70s. It is very similar to the screen shot of the Revo "Birmingham" I posted a few days ago. The variant in that picture looks a bit like a "stretched" Gamma 6.

A tip off from the Yahoo Group and a bit of search through the archives found these:

Queen's Square Crawley, 1971 and multihead lantern.

Those lanterns wouldn't look out of place if they were installed today.

I wonder if this is the Tapered Bowl version of the Revo Festival?

I'd love to get my hand on one of them lanterns now!

I wonder if in the last link, that's Bewbush, a village just outside of Creepy.

Yes it is Bewbush just outside Crawley although the 2 have now merged following continued development.

Thanks for posting those images Phosco, they're brilliant!  :D

Any idea what sort of lanterns these are and what lamps they would run? I agree with Mazeteam, they look quite contemporary like some kind of Abacus or DW Windsor installation!

Excellent scene, CU triangular columns by the look of things too. These were often used with fluorescent lanterns it seems. The housing looks very contemporary for 1958, more like something from 10/15 years later at least! Impressive!

Seems there were lots of lanterns like these around Crawley back in the day! I think they're great, if only we had a time machine to see them in real life once again!
