It's interesting to see a dedicated zebra crossing street light back then, only a metre away from the trolleybus-pole mounted lantern.

Here is  the front cover image of an old Railway Magazine (April 1972) with an interesting fluorescent, which appears to be full cutoff:

This photo of Town Quay, Southampton in 1969 shows a re-lighting scheme mid process. This road is about to become a whole lot brighter at night, as the old lights appear to be open tungsten lanterns. There were similar columns on Western Esplanade up until the mid 90s which used to hold Hyperion/GEC Z9554s or similar, so I am guessing these columns are awaiting such lanterns.

I thing that I did not know was that the metal sleeved arms are original to the columns.

Very interesting Bob. Likewise, I'm surprised the metal sleeves were original to the columns. My assumption had always been based on how shiny the brackets of the Liverpool examples are!

I can't remember where but I've seen a CU advert which states that the metal sleeves were an option for new columns.

Here's what York Exhibition Square used to look like in 1977 - with top entry GEC Z8430s

King's Cross mainline station is one that has cropped up several times in this thread. London Reconnections have an 'In Pictures: King's Cross in the Fifties' gallery with some great pictures displaying the streetlighting of the time. Is anyone able to identify any of the unusual lanterns that feature, such as the top-entry boxes in the first photo dating back to the late '40s?

I've found a glut of interesting York bus photos from round the 1960's-70's

the blue glow of MB mercury lamps (no lantern in this view)

and the lantern creating that glow, a Revo Horizon

and another

GEC Z8430's on the wall

Revo Horizon on the corner of Piccadilly and Merchantgate, with a top entry lantern in the background on Piccadilly

This one is all about that lantern on the corner of the building with the white arch. The bracket is a 1930's Revo with toggle switch (like the one I have), but I can't work out the lantern type - looks like an open fitting:

Bootham. The battleship grey column in the foreground (still there today) looks to have a Z8430 installed

A good photo of Rougier Street before the General Accident (now Aviva) massive office block was built, AND before the one way loop was instated. At this time too, York had two railway stations - the sign on the railings about the 'car sleeper loading dock' motorail platforms would have been pointing to the old station within the city walls. Beyond the 2nd halfcab double decker is a green column, and you can just about make out a cranked half circle bracket and top entry lantern. This photo is BEFORE 1962 as there's no wall brackets with GEC Z8430's fitted.

Lendal Bridge, with the original Rowntrees Factory behind - and this Revo Monarch column has a top entry adaptor fitted, and what I guess is a Revo Silver Blue lantern

York Rail Station. The first photo shows a traction pole in the background, but the main focus of attention for us is the centre-mounted columns with those elaborate brackets.

Some of those Alpha 3s you can see to the right of the clocktower are still here today, but the ones actually in the photo were replaced with Urbis Cabrios, in line with the seafront, in about 2003, there is an MRL6 retrofit from the 90s on one column, and two other columns have been retrofitted with flat-glass Arcs.  All of these can be seen behind the camera. A few more Arcs have also appeared around the junction with Belgrave Road due to a signalled junction being put in, which I think was done shortly after the Streetview visited in 2009.
