The first one looks a bit GEC-ish to me, what with the shape of the bowl.

In the 2nd photo, it does look like a Z8430 (The Z8430CM is a later version of the lantern... if it's 60's then it isn't a CM)

In the 1st photo, dare I say it may be a strange side entry Z5560 DB (deep bowl)

I thought I was back in 1987 by looking at the photos. I've been after going on the DLR but never got around doing so.

There seems to be a mix now. Shadwell uses unknown lanterns. There are also some rather quirky triangular lanterns at Poplar. The newest platforms for the recent Stratford International extension have used ZX3s.

DLR must be modernising the lighting then, I think they should use the same lanterns as the promanade at Blackpool, on those which I describe as columns from the year 4011.

Anybody else thinking those triangular lights are Poplar are possibly designed to look an awful lot like the bridge in the background?

Yes, that was probably the idea. The stations were all slightly different architecturally and doing something like that was almost certainly part of the design brief.

Thanks for the replies on the last set of photos I posted guys :D I have a few more for you, this time from http://busestractionengines.blogspot.com:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A8zJ72SkFx4/Tsv-nWL1GZI/AAAAAAAAA2U/dV1mmNFbScY/s1600/504.jpg
Some of those GEC lanterns that Blackpool used to have on the Prom which lit up in different colours during the Illuminations and on the side street a Revo Sol-e-Tern Junior. I vaguely remember these but they were sleeved and replaced by Beta 79s not long after this picture was taken in 1985.

This is another picture of those GEC Z8433/4 cut-off lanterns identified by Claire a while back. These were probably installed due to the proximity of the airport which is further along the road this picture was taken. These were sleeved in the mid 80s and replaced with GEC Z9554Ms (which, interestingly were only semi cut-off as are the current MRL6s).

Some Phosco lanterns (P355s?) in St. Annes Square. Some of these still exist on St. Annes seafront.

I really like this photo! Lytham Road in the early 80s with GEC fluorescents. The lantern in the foreground and the one behind it appear to be two different types, a Z8370 and a Z8381 respectively is my guess. Perhaps the Z8370 was a casual replacement, it looks a bit more slimline and 'modern'.

Same road a year or so later and the fluorescents were all sleeved and replaced with Alpha 3s running SON probably in 1984 by my reckoning.

GEC Viatrons in the days when buses had conductors and drivers wore hats!  ;)

Some GEC high-masts here. This photo confuses me as it looks like Fleetwood Docks in the background yet the 22A bus route never went to Fleetwood!  If it's not Fleetwood then I haven't a clue where it is!  :?

Brill photo giving us another look at those GEC Z8433/4 lanterns seen earlier.

I like them... they look bizarrely too modern for the photo!

There's still some advertising space on the bus right at the back, they've really missed a trick in not utilising that space for adverts. You just can't get the staff! ;)

From looking at old photos they seem to date from the mid 70s when they replaced GEC Viatrons on the same columns so much older than they look! They did run SON though. The lanterns there now are some weird Urbis lanterns which look like sails. If you look here and scroll to the last but one photo on the left-hand row you will see one of the P355s which still exist on the seafront.

 It seems that the bus was used mostly for tourist excursions (being an old bus even when that photo was taken) and these are advertised on the boards on the side but in the picture it's doing some rare service work on the now long-gone number 3 service which only took 15 minutes to get from one end of it's short route to the other!

Some selected pictures from Steve Thoroughgood's album:

GEC Clearmain with tapered side bowl
Alpha 3
Gamma 4s
Fluorescent from 1975
Fluorescent and large post-top from 1975
Two top-entry 90W SOX lanterns tram poles
A 'shovel' and aluminium canopied Beta 79 (the latter slightly camouflaged by the house)

Thanks to Phosco152 and Indust for identifications
