Blooming heck! I bet if they were to be any longer you'd be able to snap them. An ingenious idea of getting a good spread of lighting, we should have them today instead of flat steel pole columns.

Ah fantastic - thanks for sharing that old photograph. I've parked in that car park before and remember being intrigued by the columns. I take it they're still standing in the interests of preserving heritage?

No idea why they're still there. Guessing they're preserved. Meanwhile, i've stumbled on more slides of Leeds thanks to a ''Secret Old Leeds'' Facebook group. Check these out:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/75850763@ ... 038808369/ Shows what used to be fitted to the Trampole Columns in Colour.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/75850763@ ... 038808369/ Inner Ring Road Mercury and SOX.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/75850763@ ... 038808369/ SON, Boooo. Though it's 1970's SON.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/75850763@ ... 038808369/ Shows what the above link's lanterns may have been.

I'll have to look at those photos a bit later on... after Flikr have decided to rectify the ever-growing list of faults on their new style photo pages, the new fault being that every single photo is blocked by an ambiguous error message.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread but I couldn't find a similar one.

I have a big AA book of British towns. It has a great photo of Bournemouth seafront by the pier when it was lit with mammoth fluorescent post-top lanterns! There are lots of other photos of interest, including Blackpool (on the promenade?) during the illuminations with more vibrant fluorescent post-tops in the foreground!

Old Amersham in Bucks some time in the early 1980s shows GEC Z9554Ms in the background of an image taken by the London Country Bus Depot. Now demolished to make way for Tesco’s.

Old view of Swanage in Dorset, although the caption date may not be fully accurate. Column looks to be a CU Avenue 3 type.
