Most of us are familiar with the ITV "ident" that features an empty street of high-pressure sodium street lights...

Image

...and some of you might even remember this mystery lantern from the days when you could advertise smoking on billboards...

Image

...but this use of a street lamp for advertising has got to be the best example to date...

Image

From the DirectDaily web site: "As part of a national campaign promoting McDonald's restaurants, a downtown Vancouver lamppost became part of an out-of-home optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the sidewalk ... They developed the concept for a lamppost near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized carafe was attached to the end."

I quite like the coffee one, i wonder if it illuminates at night. The smoking ad with what i suspect is a CGI modified MA60 on a concrete coloumn looks like it dates back to 1992.

It looks like the clips on the smoking one resemble GEC, so yeah it may have been modified from being repaired or something.

That last picture, it just seems like someone has been on paint!

Yes it does look too good to be true!

I've just had a quick look on Google Images and found another picture here...

Click here for a bigger version of the above pic, and have a closer look at the picture in the bottom left corner. It appears a standard bucket van was woefully inadequate for its installation and they needed to hire a crane!

I thought of the ITV1 example as soon as I read the thread title! It is a shame they've gone for an American lantern.

I first saw that picture and thought "what the .."?!!
That is really random!

Also, remember a couple of years back just after the new Wembley Stadium had been built, there was an npower advert with a person smiling at a streetlight and it got brighter, then frowned at it and it went dimmer.

I'd love to see what it looks like when lit!
especially as it's dark brown!

It'd probably give a tired trucker a shock, seeing a glowing hovering coffee pot.

At least he soon wake up seeing a hovering coffee pot, then the LAPD would get reports of a UFO in downtown.

That coffee-pot streetlight is excellent, the design wouldn't work so well on the boring 'straight' lighting columns we tend to have in this country these days!

I wonder why ITV decided to have an American streetscene in it's ident rather than a British one? Unless the production company who made it is American or something?
