I think that happens in some cases, but in others the insurance either doesn't pay or doesn't pay enough to cover the costs. But even if it does I still think it would be better if the person responsible faced having to pay a lump sum for damages.

It should be like that but that would likely mean a court case which would equal or exceed the amount needed to replace a column. I once heard a figure of £2000 to replace a column. I suppose £700 for service tap,  £600 for column, £400 for lantern and £300 for wiring/labour/fuel etc.

If the driver's details are obtained at the RTC (i.e. it's Police reported) then the cost of a new column with all associated costs (discon/recon) etc etc is all covered by their insurance. If they have no insurance (probably quite common!) then I guess the council just have to swallow the cost from their capital budget. So yes non-insuranced drivers are again costing US!

And it's the uninsured ones who are more likely to collide with street furniture as they're already being reckless with insurance so it is also reflected in their driving - probably also 'assisted' if they're driving a stolen motor.

I'm going to keep this on my list of tabs, to use on the local paper website when people start complaining that Amey have been taking out their lamp posts!

Oh dear! I wonder where that is? It looks like the road and pavement have recently been re-laid so maybe it was days before it was due to be replaced anyway?

I'm glad to report that there doesn't seem to have been any streetlight casualties of this morning's storm in my area . All the canopies of the ZX1s on my street are all firmly in place (the engineers must have remembered to bang them down when they installed them). But I only walked down to the tube station - there could be casualties in the other direction, which I'll probably be able to report tomorrow when I go shopping. Has anyone else had any streetlight casualties?

I remember an old concrete column that leaned rather precariously. The council put a new column and lantern next to it. Before they could remove it, the old column fell into the new column and dented it!
