I nearly lost control of the wheel today at a large signalised crossroads in Hemel Hempstead because I saw four tiny Phosco P178 lanterns suspended on top of 12m high columns!

Here's something from my trip today.

EVERY single one of these globes have been installed upside down!! The baffle cone has been turned around and simply rests in the bottom of the globe.

Globes were available top entry from manufacturers, it's just that post-top was more commonly ordered by councils. I quite like the installations pictured, treble brackets with top entry smokey glass globes.

To be fair, I don't mind the triple bracket with the smokey globes... it just looks quite odd! (but then again, I'm one who likes thing a little on the odd side!)

The other reason I suspect these are supposed to be top entry is that the bracket tops have been capped at a later date - the columns are painted but the caps are not.

If anyone was wondering where they are, it's The Lanes shopping center in Carlisle.

This is quite common with certain column manufacturers, and specifying the right cap colour is down to the council.

I noticed this before!

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... ,,2,-14.53

It's near to where Dorsetway/ QSMQ grew up... I walk past this sometimes and it appears that the bracket has been snapped off and taped back on to the stump of the attached bracket, but the tape nearest the lantern has become lose and snapped meaning that it looks like it could fall any minute  It's already installed at an odd angle, but it is a really odd installation. And there are still so many CU Byway columns with Arc brackets around there.

What caught my attention more in that link is the concrete bracket in the distance. The small versions of that type aren't that common any more but there's some larger versions around here still in use.
