I'll post some pictures as examples later, but when North Lincolnshire Council were installing LEDs as casual replacements, they'd replace any concrete columns too, if the old light was installed on a concrete column but now they are officially starting an LED lighting rollout, they have yet to replace any concrete columns since the rollout begun, and the LEDs somehow don't look quite right on a concrete column/sleeved combination.

Very disappointing as I thought they programme would be an opportunity to finally see the concrete columns scrapped, especially ones so close to the road side and any concrete columns they replaced before they put the new one further back. :(

I know some here will think nothing wrong with that and glad to see the old ones still in use a little while longer though.  ;)

Same story in Greenwich. The council did some spot replacements with both LED lanterns and columns, some of which looked worn out and had paint peeling off them. However, a couple years ago, the council started an LED rollout and most of the new LED lanterns have been installed onto the old steel columns, which again, look worn out and some have paint peeling off them too. Column replacements have only been completed on certain roads when the LED rollout began. It doesn’t look right seeing a lone 6m Mallatite column amongst a bunch of old 5-6m Fabrikat, Corus, Staunton or CU Ware columns.  :roll:

Roxeth Hill in South Harrow has had some of its Urbis Albany lanterns replaced with Urbis Amperas, but rather in a sloppy manner as some of the Albany lanterns have been missed out. Either they didn’t know an LED version of the teardrop lanterns existed, or they were cost cutting by just installing Amperas instead. Regardless, this is sacrilege.

I’ve also spotted this absolute mess on Tooting High Street in South London! A Philips CitySoul on a stub bracket, which is obviously too big for the 10m conical column it’s mounted onto! The column previously supported a CU Phosco P850 (just like the other examples here) until 2020 when the latter was installed. Not only is this sloppy workmanship done by TfL, but the CitySoul lantern runs HPS, so it’s rather weird to see LED get replaced with something supposedly less efficient. Also, if you pan the camera to 180°, you’ll see that one of the P850 lanterns is drooping quite badly!

Another similar installation I’ve spotted on Church Lane in Walthamstow is this Urbis Paseo on a grey stub bracket, mounted onto a black 10m column which originally had a different bracket with an Urbis ZX2 on it. I guess it was too much effort to paint the column grey to match the colour of the stub bracket? What’s interesting was the lantern was installed only 6 years ago.

On nearby Wyatt’s Lane, sacrilege was brought to these two (possibly) cast iron columns, which previously supported Urbis Abbeys. These Thorn Plurios look absolutely hideous on these columns, and this was clearly done for cost cutting.

Cobham Road Sunningdale
A Zeta Specialist Lighting SmartScape Nano (ugliest Street light fixture ever made) side entry tied on the top of a top entry concrete column. Come on Royal Borough of Windsor & Maindenhead you can do better. Let’s not also forget that Sunningdale is one richest and most expensive place to live outside London and it is located near Titlark Hill Road the most expensive street in UK outside London. The average price of a house on that road is £12.3 million. Come on seriously you can definitely do better and it is not a temporary installation as it was like that from 2017.

That bodge is inexcusable, and surely ought to be considered a safety risk. The lantern has not been installed in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines. Taping or zip tying a lantern onto a column is not an approved method of mounting. And the fact it's been like that for years is bad.

Side entry to "post-top", if you could call it that. That's pretty unique, using a stub bracket on an outreach bracket.

I can think of a possible reason. If the existing reduced diameter part of the column was too corroded, they may have chopped it off rather than fitting a lantern to it. This strange arrangement may have been their way of dealing with the situation, rather than doing something sensible like ordering a V-MAX with a spigot large enough for the remaining part of the bracket (if it went up that high), or just purchasing a reducer, or just replacing the column.

Not sure if this fits into the category, but these Urbis Furyos on Windmill Lane in Stratford have had their original brackets removed and were replaced with DW Windsor Kiriums around 6 years ago. However, the Kiriums look like they’re drooping off the column spigot and some of them are facing the wrong way due to strong winds. What’s causing them to droop?

That's definitely one unique way to install a Holophane V-Max! The previous lantern (GEC Z9554?) didn't have this side-entry to top-entry conversion.

Well, spotted from the train at Cambridge yesterday, how have they made this work - the bracket is unmodified and did used to have a top entry Beta 5.
