Post subject:  Lights of the city: street lighting as art
I found this small series of images by a photographer Manuel Alvarez Diestro. Nice to see street lighting picked up in a context outside of ours or professional lighting.

Interesting photos... and also a nice example of how to show off "streetlights in their environment" (one of the things I look out for in the POTS competitions) - especially the photo with the pyramid.

Mine too! Is there really any need for all those lanterns? Why use such fancy installations in such a barren-looking area? Interesting photo!

These look as if they're in the middle of nowhere as well! They look like those Phosco lanterns they used to have on the Humber Bridge.

Looks like the foundations have eroded away somewhat since that was installed! Strange as it looks quite modern as well  :?

I think that last photo you linked to is very atmospheric.

The picture I linked to will be a 'telephoto' shot, taken from a notable distance to get more columns in the frame... but it could be that development is coming soon but the roads were done first.

I would be interested to know what countries all these photos were taken in. Obviously the pyramid one was taken in Egypt but what about the others?

Has anyone ever heard of 'Urban Light' in Los Angeles? It was created in 2008 using old street lights from Southern California dating back to the '20s and '30s:

I've never heard of it, but could the Los Angelians (I don't know the correct title) be inspired by our 'streetlight showcases' from back in the day when nearly every lantern was on a public display. I can't remember what the actual event was but I do recall it being some kind of showcase.

It's probably safer to say 'the people of Los Angeles'. Our exhibition was during the '60s so their one predates it.

So the American one was built in 2008, using lanterns that had been saved from the 20s and 30s... this would surely mean the UK was first with its display on the South Bank in the 60s.

There is an important distinction. The US installation can be considered as art/sculpture using old installations.

The British installation on the South Bank in the 60s (and it wasn't the only one of its type) was an exhibition, by the manufacturers of the time, of their latest products and designed to promote sales.
