In Wooldale Holmfirth there is an old Stanton 6B column with a round base. Sadly it has been falling into disrepair as it has now started to spall. Lantern attached is a Beta 5.

I'll have a look on GSV as i went past earlier and spotted it.

There are still quite a large amount of Stanton 6B columns in my area (although not as common as the 7B which is extremely numerous!). Unfortunately all are sleeved  :(

A Stanton 6b is a main road column like this so it would look odd with a Beta 5. A Stanton 7 is a side road column, a sleeved example is here.

Its the 7B and not the 6b in Wooldale.

This is why I never try and name the concrete columns... I don't know what models they are, have never bothered to learn, and don't think I ever will!

I can remember the 6B as it has a round base and the 'finned' bracket is hollow, but when it comes to side road instilations i often think / write it as a 6B column rather than 7B.

Unfortunatly the GSV motor has missed out the snicket with the Beta 5 installed the wrong way round on the 7B column.

I thought the 7B was the one with the more flat, rectangular-bottomed base like this

That is the later design of the Stanton 7, my example was an earlier version. The base of the Stanton 6 also became slimmer in later versions.

Aah, that's interesting. In my area there are some roads where both types of columns are used. I wonder how this came to be? The later version tends to be more prevalent though. I wonder if the odd earlier fatter-bottomed columns were casual replacements for older cast-iron columns? My thinking is that the newer version came out in the mid-50s maybe? Some late 40s/early 50s council estates in my area (Grange Park and Mereside) have tons of the older-type columns. Deepdale Road on Mereside has the older style columns from end to end whereas the adjoining Branstree Road has the newer-type therefore Branstree must have been built just after they changed the design.

Simon Cornwell gives dates of the Stanton 6 and 7 from the 1930s. Click on the 7b link and see examples in Salisbury which appear to be late 1940s with the larger bases.

The 6B was "modified" in the 1950s went it became more streamline in the base probably to reduce costs and weight. The 7 was probably redesigned around the same time.

There are roads in Salisbury where both the big and slimmer base Stanton 7s are used with the slimmer ones perhaps replacing older (cast iron?) columns like what may have happened your way. I haven't found any decent pre 1950s pictures of Salisbury side roads to confirm.

There are however loads of 1950s pictures on the web of Salisbury City centre and these show big based Stanton 6Bs but also 6Cs and a few 6Gs.

OIder pictures do show cast iron (gas?) columns prior to that.
