Or twin lamped lanterns? Abacus Orions can be twin lamp, but in the case of the Orion they only have room for the integral gear for one lamp, so if twin lamped one set of gear has to be located in the base. Perhaps the older ones had no room for integral gear.

Yes, I mentioned this earlier... but I probably didn't explain it as well! Anyway, those dual door columns with sugarcube lanterns on have had those lanterns on right from back when the building was ASDA - and we're talking up to 1994 latest - so the Orion wouldn't have been around before then so if these columns aren't the same age as the sugarcubes, then I'm wondering what was there before...

Do the sugarcube lanterns have square columns?

No, tubular steel columns.

Square columns are fairly rare I think...

Our sugarcube lanterns at Tesco were on square columns. I assumed it was as standard!

Today I went out and about in search of the bucket crews (both vans AND the HIAB were out today - dunno where though!) and I went through a previously unchartered part of Bishopthorpe. On a side road I found two examples (there may be a third) of the most unusual column/bracket combo I have ever seen:

The column itself is only between 3-4ft tall, and has a door with a standard tumbler cylinder cam lock - but no identifaction marks. The bracket seems integral to the column (no grub screws or obvious join, though there are steel bands round the top of the column) but goes all the way up to make a 5m tall installation. This bracket puts the 'giant' colchester ones in the shade!

Anybody got any clue as to what it is??

They have them on Stirling Way in Horsham, some are painted some aren't. Plus to make it harder they don't have any ID marks on them which has made it harder but at a guess they could have been made by GEC, British Steel or CU.

I recall seeing those a while back from a Design Journal archive. There was a picture of an outdoor street lighting exhibition in the 1960s with one of these columns fitted with an Atlas Beta 3. It was posted on the old UKASTLE, but I can't find the link at the moment.

EDIT: the columns were made by Metal Developments Ltd, and were part of the Sentinel range. VADS link.

Cheers. certainly makes a difference to the usual metal columns round this way! And, presumably, it was installed sometime round the early-mid 1960's - which now has me wondering what lantern was originally installed on it.

Unusual columns on the Middlesex University campus (apologies for the quality):

As you can see they are designed so that there is a light for the path as well as the road. Vectras are used throughout. However, I wonder how effective they are? Perhaps two lanterns per column would be more justified if they were flat-glass luminaires.

Those would even humble the American style columns!
