Indeed, here's a better picture!

Also worth noting - the Eleco Welwyn on the left. The column is in a grave yard so I'm guessing it couldn't be easily removed, so it's surviving amoungst the survivors!

 It's only very recently cropped up too! :( But 9 GEC Z8430CMs is still pretty impressive these days! There was another one in the photo close to the camera, but I zoomed in a bit which cropped it out.

There's just nine in the photo! There are a lot more actually spread out over the two villages!!

That Welwyn will have been the original lighting spec for the road, likely put in during the 50s. Then in either the late 60s or early 70s the road needed better lighting and so the Z8430s were installed, but the likely reason for the Welwyn staying is out of reverence for those in the graveyard.

Wow! it's like going back in time. The Z8430CM are a pretty good lantern, ones made in the 60s were more well made then the 70s ones, and having glass bowls will mean it never going yellow, I think they would probaly out last the columns they're on.
They just don't make lanterns like they used to :(

Indeed... I have a 1962 Z8430 (the Z8430CM came along a bit later) which was the last in the city and had been used for 48 years.... in its later years having been converted to 80-125w MBF rather than 400w (and I'll keep it at the low power because I don't have any big power MBF lamps or gear and don't have the room to stockpile them either)

What an excellent find- imagine if they were all 250w MBF still! Amazing what's still out there....

Those columns look like they could be 1980s. Southampton was still installing the Z8430CM into the early 1980s.
