Taken this morning in Staines, Surrey and soon to be replaced by the PFI, this road is lit by Six S&L columns with hoop brackets and Beta 5s. The very distant one is day burning. Not totally original however, as the Beta 5s would have replaced top entry mercury lanterns in the 1980s. Never the less, no casual replacements of columns or lanterns.

Close up.

Much further west in deepest Wiltshire, quite an impressive array of 135W SOX.

I would like to obtain a good S&L fluted column of this type.

How about this 1/2 mile stretch of 1980s Stainton 8m columns with gear in shoe MA90s in Lincolnshire on a dead straight road. Not a single casual replacement of lanterns or columns and the only non original change is the fitting of SELC electronic photocells.

Very good in the sense it is unspoilt (and indeed SOX lit) but I must admit they aren't the most attractive of installations!

I don't mind them, if I'm honest. The gear shoe versions are getting hard to find now.

I'm proud to announce that this wonderful concrete installation with an unknown SOX cut-off lantern (which I assume is extremely rare) installed on it has outlived The Maypole pub behind it. I imagine a lamp post as old as this outliving a public place must be an exceedingly rare occasion!

Berkshire still has quite a bit of main road SOX lighting in use

South East of Reading in the borough of Wokingham are these early 1980s columns with MA50s.

Over in Bracknell a similar installation, this time 1970s MA60s.

The weather allowed me the opportunity for this dramatic shot of a dayburning MA60.

I alighted at South Acton today and found this unspoilt stretch of Golden Ray 501s on hockey stick columns. They just go on and on, thankfully having avoided the Ealing Sapphire PFI.

Yeah, I saw these a couple of years ago when I passed through South Acton and thought exactly the same thing! Amazing that they're still standing and unspoilt in 2013!
