It seems to have been standard practice, to use reduced height lighting columns on camping and caravan sites for many years now. Usually, the demands for such installations is dictated by the location of the site (often semi rural in nature) and the minimal traffic encountered.
Here at Great Birchwood Country Park in Warton, Lancashire, the circtitious access road is lit by numerous short columns. They are all hexagonal tapered designs, which actually look like repurposed ex LA sleeves. Others use the simple curved tubular bracket arm. As the columns have no original access door, the service cable is terminated via a separate connection box at the base.
Lanterns for the most part tend to be GEC / Siemens, although commercial SON floods are also used. Some of the lanterns have been crudely fitted to the bracket using a flange plate attached through the GRP canopy, instead of the dedicated side entry spigot.
The whole installation is an interesting if neglected service. There are plans to redevelop the site for housing, therefore they may not be around for long.
