The MK 3 Alpha 8 and some Beta 5s made at a certain point share the same gasket material, and that seems too soke up water like a sponge.

Just for clarification in case the GRP Alpha 8 technically is labelled as Mk16, we normally refer to it as the Mk3 for simplicity... Mk1 being the metal-canopied 2-lamp Atlas Alpha 8, Mk2 being the metal-canopied deep ridged bowl early Thorn Alpha 8, and Mk3 being any GRP version.

I think with the Alpha8 MK 16 that it is more to do with poor maintenance than anything else. Many of the examples round here are approaching 20 years old and only a few contain water. On some examples the council have replaced the gaskets which appears to have solved the water holding problems.  This presumption could be misleading as some have definitely been drilled to allow water to escape. Plus they get cleaned by DCC around every five years along with all of the other older lanterns. There are very few filthy examples here like you can see in some places.

Quite a few SOX lanterns here in Scunthorpe appear to have this issue.
