Penetrating its weatherproof seals, the unrelenting wind sweeping in off cold the North Sea has taken its toll on this Philips Residem fluorescent lantern situated on the seafront at Cullercotes,

This seems to a defect with this lantern as one of two examples near to me are also like this, as is a one identical to that lighting a footpath just off Scottswood Road in Newcastle.

It's a shame that more 'modern' lanterns are STILL having problems with water ingress. :(

Around my way, the main lanterns notorious for flooding are Z9554Ms. In fact I suspect this has prompted the replacement of many examples. New bowls were ordered and fitted but this didn't seem to stop many from flooding. I have seen a few examples where the bowls have been so full of water, it prevents the lamp from switching on. MA50s/90s are also quite bad for dirt and water in the bowl. Alpha 9s are another one. On side streets, the Beta 5s (1980s onwards with the plastic clip) also are quite often seen with water ingress.

Some of the ingress problems will come down to a cheap manufacture process for fibreglass canopies (such as the Z9554M) which deteriorate quickly and let water seep through; other problems can be caused if the cell/cell socket isn't secured tightly enough. Remember that although the product label states the optic of a lantern might be IP44 rated, that IP rating has only been assigned after tests have been carried out on A lantern of that type, not on THAT actual lantern itself.

These later Thorn offerings are absolute junk.

MkIII you mean? The MkIII has terrible ingress protection so I wouldn't be surprised!

And the GRP is appalling. Only seen a hand full of good condition ones in service. I have noticed that Beta 5s are bad for water.
