I have recently discovered that Google Maps has a custom map feature that allows users to add labels, markers and photos to locations of interest.

if we could create a map to which we all have access then we would basically have an interactive UK streetlighting map, where we can chart survivors, pfi  schemes and other installations of note.

Any thoughts on the idea?

We could, but it would be a pain to keep up to date. Any thoughts on this?

It's an interesting idea, and something I've thought about before. The question is, is it more effort than it is worth? What detail would go into the labels, and would it be consistent?

I did merge this topic into our suggestions thread, but perhaps it is worthy of its own thread after all. My thoughts:

In the suggestions thread, Alex wrote:
Hi Silverray, thanks for your suggestion. It would be an incredibly large project (a bit like our Wiki, which has been underutilised) but I'm certainly intrigued by this idea.

I think it's a smashing idea. While it may be a pain in some ways, if we just posted them when we found them and at that, one at a time, then the process would be easier. It would perhaps save us writing out long paragraphs explaining what the lantern used to be or what it is now. Just short, snappy words such as the road name, lantern type and age.

How aggregate would this data be? I.e. are walking talking column by column, road by road or district by district?

It would probably be easier if it was done on a borough by borough basis, as in Brighouse there are two York Street's (both are next to each other but both have different postcodes as one was renamed quite a few years ago), two Church Street's and two George Street's one near me and one at the other side of town. So to curtail conflicking reports on lantern changes street by street, the best way to do it would be the borough by borough (or unitary by unitary).

I am more than happy to set one up for us to try as a trial, and if it's just not practical it can be deleted

I suppose this is a more visual way of presenting lantern-type by location as opposed to the Wiki. I'll be reviewing the Wiki with Phosco152 at some point in the near future.

Thanks SilverRay, please feel free to set this up as a trial.

I think its a good idea but I could also see how it might be quite awkward to set up or maintain.
