I have been looking to buy a signpost light..

Something along the lines of a 8w flourecent thing that there are countless thousands around the country.

So I tried looking up Forest City...
I cant find a website or reference to them this century!
Whatever has happened to them?

If they no longer exist who makes these lamps now?

I've no reason to think they are no longer active. I've just typed in "forest city altrincham" on google and their website - "Forest City Signs" is at the top of the results. They seem to have quite a comprehensive website including the light units you are after. A quick phone call or email would confirm their current status.

In view of the huge investment in highways at the moment and the move away from illuminated signs, I would have thought there would be plenty of these things around from the LAs plus the usual suspects.

Ebay had a set on for sale, the other week or so.

Perhaps I am being a bit dumb here, but when I google

"Forest City Signs Altrincham"

The first result I get is
www.homepages.zen.co.uk/home/page/forestcity/page1.html

Which seems to be from about 1998.

The others seems to be either enthusiast websites or companies house type sites.

Try the following for alternative sign light suppliers:

road_signs.co.uk, KASPA signs or Simmonsigns

Apologies for mucking you around. I was a little too eager to hit the "submit" button. Just goes to show you shouldn't always believe what you (or rather I) unearth online!

Having had another look, I do now get an uneasy feeling that things are not quite what they seem. The old Forest City would appear to be no more, although its products such as the sign lighting units do seem to live on under a new guardianship.

Further research seems to indicate that Forest City Signs of Altrincham became part of  "Signature Ltd - (Traffic - Lighting - Transmission) back in 2001. Presumably through acquisition and expansion, the group seems to be involved in the manufacture of pretty much everything found on the UK streetscene.

The fluorescent sign lights still seem to be in production albeit with the LED option, although I would have thought that nothing other than a vintage FCS product would do for a streetlighting enthusiast.

Yes Forest City, Road Signs Franco, Pearce Gowshall,  Triplex Traffic, Truesigns all became swallowed up by the current Signature Ltd which still retains a skeleton of products from across the companies.
I can probably get you a decent 8w sign light if you don't want to pay for a brand new one?
