Stumbled across this photo of Blackhorse Road station in North London from 1984 on Geograph and it documents some concrete columns being replaced with red steel columns. I think the replacement columns still stand today. In the Streetview you can also see those wonderful flourescent lanterns in the station car park, which is a piece of now and then which hasn't changed at all!

Concretes on parade on Streatham High Road in 1978. Now Woodhouse Discs. Note the GEC Turtle lighting the entrance to Kwik Fit on the left, just visible in the 1978 photo.

What look like top-entry GEC Z9454s lit Howland Street by the BT Tower in 1977. Today totally bland and characterless Arcs on standard columns light the way.

Lots of changes between these two images... except for one object which remains the same.
1974 and 2009/2014

This old picture showing some installations in Consett. There is some festive lighting installed on the columns along with some festoon type lighting strung from column to column and over the road. Would never be allowed now. The steelworks can be seen in the background and gives an idea to how imposing it was on the town with its numerous cooling towers and chimneys. Not to mention the flares that used to light up the sky when they were lit at night.

This is the same scene today : http://goo.gl/maps/2Wn1x

There are lots of old photos of the steelworks showing lanterns ranging from Alpha 10s, Revo Daleks and some Atlas Alpha 8s I belive.

The festive lighting was produced by the now ceased trading Irvine Martin Lighting of Diss, Norfolk.

That's interesting to know, I had wondered whether it was custom made or not. We always had the best decorations when it was Consett Urban District Council, now they are somewhat pitiful to put it politely.

Well I shall have to look at them at an unspecified date in the future... when the new Streetview actually works with Firefox.

Great comparisons Alex, thanks.

I'm on Chrome now and when I go on Google Maps fresh there is no clock icon in the top left corner. Does this mean it's not there yet???
