Penglais Hill, Aberystwyth in (I guess) 2005.
Image
A variety of 135 Sox lanterns on various Fabrikat columns. Z9554s with deep and shallow bowls closer, and GR150s further back with a few MA50s casual replacements in the mix.

Penglais Hill now:

Post-top Iridiums burning 150w SON on white columns by CU.

The Beta 5s (dating back to roughly 1995) were replaced on Monday 27th June with Arcs. Contrary to other David Webster schemes, the Arcs were retrofitted to the existing columns:

The single Beta 2 installation was fully replaced by an Arc on a 6 m column a few months back. The Beta 2 was a rare lantern in Enfield as generally all side road columns were no higher than 5 m meaning the optimum lamp type was 35 W.

The following image is a photo of a print that was in a friend’s house.

Church St, Enfield, circa 1960. Almost brand new CU concretes with 140W SO lanterns.

A closer view below.

And this is what it looks like today.

Remarkably, the buildings are largely unchanged, Pearsons is still there on the left with just new signage on the shop front. However, the old lighting is long gone, replaced with SON lighting on wall brackets.

Thanks Phosco152!

A friend of mine has a local history book with a photograph of this street scene and I'm positive that it depicted the street as being lit with Alpha 1s... hmm I cannot remember the date of the photograph now but I have a feeling it was 1970s. It street was relit with wall mounted Alpha 8 Mk2s (as seen in the GSV link) which were no doubt installed during the 1980s.

The Pearsons was recently broken into by the rioters

Quite strange to think that back in the day a busy shopping street like this was lit with low-pressure sodium! I would have thought fluorescent might have been used here instead.

That would have been the story in central London; plenty of fluorescents. Enfield is in the suburbs so probably just used whatever the borough standard was - SOX, SOX and more SOX!

Here's an excellent video photo montage of Leeds in 1966. Amongst other lanterns, It shows the Fluorescents and even a Beta 3.

http://youtu.be/nBcqGXgd4ZE

Another one from the 60's and 70's showing the Woodpecker Pub (now gone) and the A64 at the Woodpecker Flyover.

I'm gonna miss the old lighting and the memories it conjurers up now it's all gone.

More proof that Leeds had Mercury Lighting back in the 50's and 60's. This is in Armley:

Recent image, though the lighting has now changed:

So much history on that one stretch of road. There used to be a depot there.

The column in the foreground has been replaced (and it's newer equivalent moved to the opposite side of the road) but the column further down, which can be seen in the background of the old Flickr picture, has been retained, sleeved and fitted with a Thorn Beta 5 as can be seen here: http://tinyurl.com/5uuueyt. I'm guessing all the old MBF lanterns were replaced with Beta 5s along here, possibly in the 80s. The old lanterns were GEC Z8591s by the way.

There used to be a bus depot to the right of the Flikr picture. It was demolished to make way for a road. This estate now has the staple post top cosmo Iridium fitted.

Back in the 80's, I never saw any mercury in Leeds. I'm guessing most went during the power crisis in the early 70's as most of the lanterns I remember as a kid fit the era of the 70's.

Most of the residential columns were still unsleeved in the 1980's, having been bulk sleeved in the 90's. Quite a few got MI26's fitted once they were sleeved and these appeared way brighter than the old Beta 5's were.
