There used to be a bus depot to the right of the Flikr picture. It was demolished to make way for a road. This estate now has the staple post top cosmo Iridium fitted.

Back in the 80's, I never saw any mercury in Leeds. I'm guessing most went during the power crisis in the early 70's as most of the lanterns I remember as a kid fit the era of the 70's.

Most of the residential columns were still unsleeved in the 1980's, having been bulk sleeved in the 90's. Quite a few got MI26's fitted once they were sleeved and these appeared way brighter than the old Beta 5's were.

I would guess that MBF lighting may have been phased out later than 1972/3 in Leeds, when Ted Heath's Tory government were gasping their last; probably more likely late '70s and early '80s.

I recall during the late 1970s that Wolverhampton Council began looking to SOX as a replacement for mercury lighting in the Borough's side streets (Sodium lighting on main roads being the norm for years). However, this didn't gain full momentum until the 1990s and even today, pockets of MBF remain if you know where to look. This course of action must have reflected elsewhere in the UK.

I've just been sent a picture of Leeds' Eastgate in the centre, taken sometime in the 60's. It shows an unspoilt line of twin armed Kuwaits.

Nowadays  it's so different.

In this Vee-twin form, I think that they were known as Coventry's.

Much more imposing than a line of post-topped Iridiums that's for sure!

Shame the catenary lighting has gone. The Flikr photo looks as though it was taken with just one set of lighting left. I got distracted with the other photo due to the template design for that Wiki not fitting correctly in several places!

That Flickr photo won't load for me, the background just keeps flickering. Strange. But yeah, catenary lighting was amazing. I remember the catenary at the Worsley Interchange very well, a really impressive sight which used to fascinate me when I was a kid. I was so disappointed when I went that way in about 1997 and all had been replaced with boring ZX3s. Scandalous!  :(

Would have been funny if there was an Albany installed there!

Now and then with a difference...

Back in 1984, I visited Hong Kong. Today, whilst looking for something else, I came across this picture taken in April 1984 of the YWCA building on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. 2 GEC Clearmains on probably 1950/60s columns complete with high level gear boxes can be seen. Although I can't be sure for certain, they were probably running mercury - unlike my visit in 2007, when SON predominated in HK.

Fast forward 25 years to this GSV image from 2009. The building is still there, it’s still the YWCA, although the building has been painted - although I prefer the original look. The Clearmains have long gone - and look what is in their place.
