And if you go back 2 images from the one you mention, there are images of Metrovick S050 lanterns on Stanton 8 columns with the rare angular brackets.

One of these lanterns survived (at a different location) into the 21st century so existence of that lantern type was known about, but the Metrovicks must have been more common and probably the "default" 140W SO/90W SOX lantern in Weymouth at the time.

Salisbury, A36 ring road 2009.

Same location 2020.

The new installation is considerably less visually intrusive. The SOX lighting was replaced by Iridiums in 2011, they didn't even last 10 years.

The Highways England  works started in March, but is still on going. Conventional columns are used on this section, but further east, it looks like crash safe columns in sockets will be used.

Lanterns are Phosco P861
