The villages of the Wallops on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border have been mentioned on Ukastle before for their parish mercury lighting. 2 phases of LED replacements have meant that only 4 of those I originally photographed, still survive.

No 1 on the junction with the A343.

An amazing long bracket with GEC Z5590.

A Phosco P236. and a 2nd one.

And finally, a newly discovered Z5590 on another gigantic bracket.

Meanwhile in Winchester, another relic has sadly lost its bowl.

I took a night drive by Middle Wallop and Over Wallop last night. There are a total of 10 mercury lanterns surviving.

Thorn Beta 79s 1 2 3

Phosco P235s 1 2

GEC Z5590s 1 2 3 4 5

Two of the GEC Z5590s are not working, which are No.2 and No.3 on the photos above (Station Road short bracket and the newly discovered long bracket on Pound Road. This will likely not be a good omen for the remaining mercury stock. No.2 was one that phosco152 forgot to mention, but there is actually a fifth surviving Z5590 which is No.5 down a footpath. As for the Phoscos, these are remote gear and so P235s. With regards the Beta 79s, there used to be some in the area latterly fitted with CDO-TT lamps, but it seems all these got replaced with the latest LED replacements whereas the mercury ones were left.

The new LED lighting is excessively bright, with the 2nd phase ASD Diamond Highway LED lanterns being especially overpowering compared with the 1st phase DW Windsor Kirium Pro Mini LED lanterns. Far brighter than what would have been installed if they had signed up their parish lighting for renewal with the PFI. But at least it is variety.

In Southfleet (Kent), this swan neck beauty always took my notice when I used to drive past it as a kid. As it's private land, the risk of replacement is very low. Despite not living in the area anymore, I can confirm it does light at night. It used to run SOX but I believe it's been swapped for a LED retrofit since.

Meanwhile, some distance away over near Hodsoll Street (NW Kent) on private property exist these post-top SOX installations. They look so old they probably burned SLI lanterns long ago. I'm not good at remembering lantern identities and the image quality is poor., however I can confirm these still exist, though one of them has had an awkward floodlight retrofit.

Here you can get a better idea of the type of installation, though sadly it's the retrofitted one. There are at least two or three of them on-site. However, I don't think they're operational. In real life they look to be in relatively good condition.

Lastly (and technically not a survivor in the classic sense), are these MI36/XGS104s (?) lighting a footpath just outside New Ash Green (near the last survivors), except I have never seen this lluminated once in the 20 years I lived there. The 2009 picture shows them clearly visible but go to 2021 and it has become a completely overgrown wilderness; however, they are still there. Why they're there and why they've never worked is a mystery to me. I think it may be a footpath. Strangely, the lighting on the corner also has never worked either, even the LED replacements were never switched on! They seem to be completely abandoned, the 104s at least.

Had to go for a blood test at my local health centre this morning, and saw this Eleco PT still clinging on in the staff car park!

On a lovely morning walk I spotted this quite remarkable find. On Richmond Grove, next to Islington Town Hall stands about 7 columns, 6 of them sporting Thorn Gamma 6s with a wide hat top. What’s remarkable about them is that all hit one of them are but mercury vapour bulbs, one of them has been switched with an LED corn bulb, of which you can spot in the first picture. There are also some more Gamma 6s and an unidentified globe lantern on a footpath connecting to the rest of Richmond Grove which is public, they are operational and all run LED corn bulbs too.

A pretty amazing find in itself to find operational mercury, but standing next to it is a forgotten SOX survivor! It appears to be the same set up as another survivor across town which I’ve posted on here before , IIRC, as well as SABRE and lighting gallery. Unlike that one which is operational though, the base of this column has been gutted which means it almost certainly doesn’t light at night.

What’s incredible is that the Gamma 6s must have been a replacement for a bunch of concrete columns in either the 1970s or 1980s, which means this lantern has been standing derelict for 40-50 years. It’s in brilliant condition despite this, and the bulb doesn’t appear blackened at all. The Gamma 6s, bar the LED retrofits, all have shockingly poor light output despite clean bowls. The bulbs probably haven’t been changed for a good 20-40 years. All but one was dayburning, suggesting that it finally gave out. That one can be seen in the background of the first picture.

The one in the forefront is actually on, it’s just so dim! Also in the background you can spot a replacement Industria 2015 which was also dayburning with a SON-T bulb. StreetView images suggest they’ve only been on for a few years as the 2008/2009 view shows them all off. I imagine these will last a while seeing as they’re slowly being corn LED retrofitted.

Bicester town centre still has some Thorn Alpha 3s on wall mounts in Sheep Street.

Nearby in Market Square, alongside lots of Thorn Areafloods, there is also a rare geared, flat-glass Thorn Alpha 3.

Looks like East Farleigh level crossing in Kent still has an Alpha 10 lighting it, and a dayburning one at that.

3 twin bracket columns with gear in shoe Alpha 3s on an industrial estate in Lowestoft, with more Alpha 3s on single arm brackets on the far perimeter of the site.

They actually existed before the road here.
