I've done a little video of the SOX lit M67. Not brilliant quality as I only have a mount for my phone.

Urbis and Stainton must have rubbed their hands at the Highways Agency ordering several hundreds of columns and lanterns for the M1 widening in Nottinghamshire. Dark Sky campaigners, environmentalists or taxpayers won't though, with most lanterns running 600w SON, and in some places 600w SON seemingly not enough, so double headers, possibly with twin 600w SON used.

Why doesn't the Highways Agency just go beserk and floodlight the M1, less columns but more elecy wasted and at 600w at a time im suprised the tarmac hasnt started to melt?

It's ridiculous that in these times of supposed energy-saving we are going from 180w SOX which lights the motorway perfectly well to possibly 2x600w SON! How can this possibly be justified?

It's stupid and no doubt it will lead to rolling blackouts when the fossil fueled power stations begin to reach the end of their lives.

Anyone know what lanterns these 600w ones are? There's new lanterns on the M62 J29-30, some double headers and there's new ones going up on the M62 J28-24. Potentially 9 Miles of 600w SON.

The old lanterns are ZX3's and a few are the same height as the new columns but most are slightly shorter. What's the chance of them being 250w and the new ones being 400w?

I believe the new 600w SON lanterns on the M1 are Urbis Sapphires. ZX3s are getting a little past their sell-by date now to be honest although the HA still use them a fair bit.

Interesting. Is that them new lanterns on the M1 J28-25 roadworks?

I'm gonna have to visit these new lanterns on the M62 now and see if they're Sapphire 3's. Looking at Urbis' website, they might be.

Suppose we'll know when they get powered up as to what wattage they're running. I'd hazard a guess it's 600w as the M62 25-28 is very busy and the HA would most likely want it lit brighter.

Some bits of the M62 are getting "poor mans widening" treatment... whereby the hard shoulders are used as normal running lanes at busy times, and layby's added every few hundred meters. Amongst my gripes against this include that brighter lighting is installed, and that if you break down in a section between the layby's then you're ******

600w Sapphire 3s are used on both the newly widened sections of the M1 around Nottingham and the M27 at J4. The M1 has double headed installations in some locations, fortunately the M27 does not. I suspect the M62 is using Sapphires as well.
