All the last remaining SOX lighting on the M25 (to my knowledge), between Junction 30 and 31, was extinguished last week. This may be in connection with the ongoing works to relieve the bottleneck between the M25 and the A13.

The works involve widening the A13 to remove the existing lane drops where it intersects the M25 at Junction 30 and improving the slip roads on and off the motorway. The central reservation-mounted Philips MA60s between Junction 30 and 31 were once part of a once mightily long 33 mile stretch of unbroken SOX lighting on the M25 from Junction 23 to Junction 31.

As Junction 30 and 31 are only about half a mile apart, the alterations to the junction's slip roads will likely result in their permanent removal.

As far as mainline SOX is concerned, yup it's gone. Sliproad SOX OTOH exists at J12, J21, J22, J23, J24, J25, J26, J28 and J29 (not sure about J30 at this point).

I drove through junctions 26-23 today and can report that the MAs on the slip roads from J25-J23 are being replaced - new columns have gone up next to them but with no lanterns yet. I'm guessing the replacements may be LED Urbis Amperas as these junctions all fall under Hertfordshire jurisdiction. This must therefore be the reason why the MAs haven't worked since the M25 widening! The MAs on the Essex junctions (24-26) still remain for now, but whether they will soon be replaced as well is unknown. It's just been reported by Essex County Council that they will be going all LED from 2017 onwards, so it's very likely! The J30 ones on both the sliproads and the mainline carriageway are definitely going though due to the junction improvement works going on there.

The county councils don't look after lighting on the motorway slip roads. They are the responsibility of Highways England, or more specifically, the M25 DBFO operator.

Steve is right. Still, I am surprised that those slip-road lanterns lasted so long... it was only a matter of time.

In which case the replacements will probably be Sapphires then. There's no LED lighting on the M25 (and no lighting at all on many of the sections through Essex, come to that), so it's unlikely to be LED (unless of course the M25 DBFO surprises us and does install LED lanterns).

I recall seeing somewhere that the lighting replacements on the M20 to M25 link road at Junction 3 were to use LED lanterns. As for Sapphires, there have been casual replacements in the widened sections with Iridiums.

The SOX on the M60 at J17/18 which, when I visited in Summer 2014 was in perfect fettle, is now very badly dying, and the verge appears to be switched off. They're widening it and turning it into a smart motorway. So glad I visited when I did, it's a sorry sight now.

I can confirm that the SOX lighting on the slip roads at M25 J21 are being replaced by new columns with outreach brackets and Urbis Sapphires (similar to those specified during the widening works). J21a is untouched so far, save for a few Iridium casual reps, I'll keep an eye on them for any further activity.

After driving through Dartford Tunnel a few times recently, I can confirm that the various columns with Trafficvisions lighting the tunnel approach are being replaced with new columns with Phosco P850 LED lanterns. I'm going past there again soon, so will grab a picture for you.

The MA60s on the mainline M25 at J30, as of a week ago, are still standing in their disconnected state, but for how much longer I've no idea due to the ongoing roadworks at the junction.

They've done well for their age and being in such a prominent location. Most of these columns are original to the tunnels opening, which was in 1963 and 1980, with the TrafficVisions being installed in 2000.

Hi All,

Hope everyone is well?

This week I have been painting my fence in the back garden. This means dragging all the lanterns out that are stored behind the shed. One of the lanterns to be dragged out is the monstrous Phosco P415. This is a big heavy lantern, so, while it is out in the garden I decided to run this lantern to see if it still works. It has sat behind the shed for 4 years. Much to my amazement it started up.

Here are a few pics of the lantern.

Regards,

Andrew.
