Work to turn the M3 into a smart motorway between junction 4 and 2 - its junction with the M25 - has started. It won't be long before the geared SOX GEC "bricks" and their columns are removed.
Taken last weekend heading north on the M3 and approaching the M25, these installations will witness only a few more sunrises.
The latest update as of today is that the central reservation lighting is now out of use. The columns have had their doors and supply cables removed. The red cross of death is also marked on them. The verge lighting on the slip road from the M25 clockwise to M3 south still appears intact - doors still on and no red crosses, so may still be in use.
I expect to see the columns gone when I pass through the junction in a weeks time.
As expected the columns in the central reservation have now gone from the M3 at J2 where it meets the M25. Absolutely no trace of them ever being there but the slip/link road examples are still intact, although it is unclear if they still work.
This was the view at dawn today, not the best image due to the light levels and the image is from a dash cam. The bridge in the background of this image can just be made out in my earlier shot, the mobile phone mast on the left of that image is between the 2nd and 3rd columns on the left of this image.
