Most stations I've seen contain the Urbis ZXU1. Why this is a repeated choice of train station lantern, I have no idea.

You're absolutely right there. According to Simon C's site, the flat glass version of the ZX1 was designed for British Rail in 1982. This offered full cut-off distribution to avoid lighting being confused with signals etc. This is also a reason why SOX isn't used at railway platforms; the yellow light may be confused with an amber signal. Hope this helps :)

I took a trip to Severn Beach the other day so saw a lot of new stations I hadn't seen before! Clifton Down had those weird circular post-top lanterns which I have never come across before online but have also seen at Westbury station.

Also of note was St. Andrews Road which is a request stop on the line, the station uses bowled Alpha 8s at 4-5m

Severn Beach at the end of the line uses more typical lighting, two double ZX3s and a double Thorn Civic replacement, flat glass.

The majority of other stations on the line use ZX1s.

At Bristol Temple Meads, I finally got a photo of this!

With the Severn beach line due to become part of the Bristol Metro over the next few years, I wonder if that will mean a "lighting upgrade"?

Good work on the CU column, like you I've seen it many times, yet never been able to get a pic - usually I'm not changing at BTM but in transit. It is in remarkably good condition, just needs a couple of new GLS lamps and I bet it still has a supply as well.

Wakefield Kirkgate and Bradford Forster Square railway stations also utillise this type of lantern too. I'm not too sure if Newark Northgate does either.

Thirsk also uses them... as I recall, they are made by He'lux lighting.

These are typical Network South East lanterns. Made by Trilux they are 9321G model normally (always?) seen with twin lamps.
Seen with SON lamps I presume in recent times they have been retrofitted with MH?

I found this picture on Tumblr, showing a fluorescent lantern at Dorking Deepdene station.

Dorking West also has a few GEC "NSE" lanterns too, but these are in poor condition. Folkestone Harbour railway station, which has been closed for a good few years, used to have a few left, but they may not be there now.

Back in 1976, Farringdon station was lit with completely unspoilt rows of Alpha 3s fitted to brackets mounted just below the roof!
